    Returning Player

I've been thinking about returning to DDO after about a six to seven year absence. I quit playing right around the time they changed the original enhancement system to the system it appears they are still using today. I've been researching the game and builds every night for the past few days and I am completely overwhelmed with all the changes. I feel like they could offer DDO as a college course! I like to play as a trap-monkey but one of my other preferred styles of play (Bow-wielding Rogue) was not viable back when I was still playing, but that appears to have changed and I am looking for confirmation on that. Is a ranged rogue now viable? If it is I am torn about how to go about doing this. I like the idea of going mostly Rogue for the increased utility of being able to assist with diplo and bluff options plus all that sneak attack damage. But I also like the idea of going mostly ranger for the self-heals and buffs. Any thoughts or advice would be appreciated and I hope to join you all in-game as soon as I get my character game-plan set.

Ranged rogue is viable, but the mechanic line is more suited to Xbows than rogue. Hailstorm was my L20 mechanic repeater, redid him a few months back. As I write this I unfortunately realize that this is going to confuse the hell out of you, but not sure what else to do.

He is now L4 arty - For Endless Fusilage in the Battle Engineer tree. I gave him 13 rogue, there is a rogue feat at 13. Then I gave him 3 lvls of fighter, first two for feats, 3rd one because that last lvl wasn't going to help much anywhere. In retrospect I might have done better with Ranger or Monk instead of fighter, not entirely sure.

I can't recall what order I took the lvls in unfortunately. I have part of a char planner, Looks like I went rogue, 2 arty for the runearm, and then 5 more rogue to get to lvl6 rogue and the third core in the mechanic. He is Int based, so need pick up Int to hit/dmg from either rogue tree, the Harper tree, or the Arty spells as soon as possible. I generally spent my earlier lvls using Repeaters as I had a ton of them from his last life. Later on I switched to Great Xbows once I was high enough lvl to able to have Sniper and Mechanical Reloader from tier 5 Mechanic Tree as well as Endless Fusilage from the Battle Engineer Tree. In the end I am 39pts in Mechanic, 27 in Battle Engineer, 3 in thief Acrobat just for the Fast Movement, and 11 in Harper Agent for Strategic Combat I and Know the Angles.

The main concept at the end is Endless Fusilage for any serious fight. I have 11 of them now which except for a few raids is more than I need, especially as I have a tendency to not use them in smaller fights. With Improved Precise Shot you do a ton of damage on any close pack grouped of mobs. Switch to Precise Shot for a Boss, and you get your 15 charges for +45 Ranged Power very quickly.

The one problem with going Int Based is there are archery feats that require Dex as the prereq. Had to buy some Tomes as I planned poorly and put too little in Dex to start out. Imp Precise Shot requires 19 Dex, and in epic levels Combat Archery requires 21. For a first life char, and if you don't have the Harper tree, may pay for you to go dex based, not sure.

    Hope that helps a bit.

That does help, thank you. I actually did think of the harper agent tree for the int to hit/dmg. The more I research this the more I wonder if I should just stick with playing as a TWF style Rogue as I played before. Going to keep playing with the planner and try to come up something that is useful and feels fun to play. Thanks for the advice though. I appreciate it.

Well if you go Assassin tree consider daggers if you are going to have the Ravenloft expansion. Vistani Knife fighting is really nice. If you do, you'll probably want to go Dex based. There isn't enough spare enhancement points to split off into the Harper tree.

Thanks! I'll plan out a build like that too because I did purchase the Ravenloft expansion because I read good reviews of it online.

After a long time thinking, I decided to just go for a tempest ranger who can do traps if necessary. This will be only a fist life and I can use it to relearn the game and figure out what I am doing without assuming too much responsibility. Once I figure things out, I'll TR into a more traditional Rogue. If anyone would like to comment on the build I decided on, I would appreciate it. I kind of followed a build I found online but altered it a bit to suit my liking a bit more. The enhancements are not in ideal order because I was just winging it after I finished the rest of the build.
