@Grapper: If I end up playing the arcane caster is a Necromancy Specialist OK for your campaign? I realize that bringing undead into civilized areas would be frowned upon no matter the alignment of whoever is controlling them.

@Mad: Would your Paladin attack undead raised by said necromancer immediately or would we be able to discuss a resolution to any of his reservations "in character"?

@Ugly: I realize that if we are fighting undead and you use some type of turn or aoe undead damaging spell it would hit Kenneth's undead as well, things happen when you utilize the cast off shells of the "living impaired".

This really won't become an issue until level 5 or 6 or so but I wanted to ask on the front end to see if it's even feasible. I want to be prepared with a character for whatever role I end up with and if necromancer is just too bothersome for the group then I won't worry about coming up with a backstory for that character.

I started working on a melee character last night just in case I need to fill that slot (1 isn't enough a lot of times), I don't know how meleeish Ugly's cleric is going to be.

I get excited about a lot of the characters I make so don't think that means I'm not sticking to my "I will pick last" promise. Don't base your selections on my incessant ramblings.

From a cleric perspective, your undead minions would be safe. The 5th edition Turn Undead is mostly lackluster, and I don't see myself using it often over the other channel divinity options. Most healing abilities no longer damage undead either, so they'd be safe from mass heals as well. That being said, dead things are icky and just about everyone agrees on that point.

I made a second cleric option too that is less melee capable but more scholarly, and I prefer it just slightly over the bulkier version. Which option I choose depends largely on group dynamics.

I was wondering if you meant herbalism kit rather than alchemist kit. There isn't an "alchemist kit" listed in the PHB, and the herbalist kit states "proficiency with this kit is required to create antitoxin and potions of healing." Then again, while there isn't an alchemists kit, there are "alchemists supplies" which could be required for making potions as well...

GM ruling? I must know for academic purposes! :D
The herbalism kit is enough to make antitoxin and potions of healing (the basic one from the PHB).

Artisan's tools: Alchemist supplies can be used to make any potion.

All the characters must be non-evil and heroic ("Damsel in distress? How can I help?" "Dangerous mission to save the world? Where do I sign up?"). If you can create a necromancer who justifies their craft with the idea of turning the tools of evil to good use, then it may be okay, but be prepared for some suspicion if you display your talents to the public.
Because he's a very very very old man. And like all rotten bastards, when they get old, they become lonely. Not that that has any effect on their disposition. But they do learn the value of company.

Kenneth would definitely be a hero. His views about postmortem remains are simply.... different than most peoples views. He has often made the argument that once someone dies they officially give up all rights to property. That's why houses etc are passed down via "Wills" to family members. If something isn't included in a Will then the rights to said property become ambiguous and since nobody specifies in their Will what they want done with their remains (well very few people do) the rights to the remains becomes contestable. Besides that he would generally only raise "evil" beings to use as tools. He wouldn't show up at a funeral and raise poor grandpa out of the casket and put him to work adventuring... even if it might mean saving the town from the encroaching goblins? What's that you say? Grandpa would've wanted the town saved? But surely he will do more good buried in the cemetery won't he? Oh you don't think so? Ok then if you insist...

Oh and Kenneth would also always have a bag containing white hats that he would put on his "helpers". That way people would know that they are "the good guys".

He would first shout something like "What foul sorcery is this?! How have these abominations climbed their way out of the depths of Hades? Stand back good folk and let not their bony grasp afflict you!" And then he would immediately attack with a big two handed sword.

If you tried to explain to him that they were friendly undead he would either think you were making a bad joke or that you were diseased in your mind and try to cure you with the holy light or a sound beating. You might be able to dress the undead up in tuxedos and tell him they are distant relatives come to visit, he might fall for that. Of course, he would be highly suspicious and keep poking at them and talking to them to see if he can trick them into revealing their true nature.

But, no, you could not reason with him that these undead are ok :D

Mwhahaha! I have a third cleric option now! Somewhat less healy and more melee damage dealery. I'm good to go for whatever situation!

                So we have...
                MadHermit: Paladin
Uglybugger: Cleric - ranged caster focus
                Eddie: Possibly Rogue?
                Makuzi: Fighter
Wraith: Ranged damage dealer (Caster or Archer)
                Daemoro: Skill Sleuth Investigator

I have made a monk and rogue so far. The character creation seems to be the easy part, it's the back stories I have a hard time with.

I think 5e focuses more on roleplay, so making optimal characters isn't as important as some of the other games.

Ive decided to go with a fighter....

Cpl. Kosef Shemov was a soldier in an army to the west. He voluntarily joined the service so that his father who was needed to tend the farm would not be conscripted. Kosef did his duty for country and attained the rank of Corporal. The war ended after 2 long years and he was sent back to his farm land. He however could not bring himself to working a farm after what he had seen. He parted ways with his family and has been looking for work as a mercenary for a few months when he.......
